On TV, at least, we sure do love our sociopaths. They seem to offer a particular kind of vicarious wish fulfillment, what with their pathological bluntness—license to say what they please and ignore the consequences—and the effortless talent they often bring to their work. Because, say what you will, sociopaths get stuff done. House offends, Monk baffles, that swollen cop on ”Law and Order: Criminal Intent” kind of stink-eyes—but each inevitably solves the mystery and saves the day. “Sherlock” (on PBS and PBS Online) presents a fresh, twenty-first century iteration of the classic sleuth of literary and public television renown, and, notably, it takes very little to bring Holmes into the era of “House”. “Caprica”, a prequel to “Battlestar Galactica” and a sort of sci-fi soap opera. I am notoriously forgiving of science fiction TV—I’ve sat (and often winced) through nearly every episode of “Heroes”, even though that show hasn’t been remotely good since its first season—but “Caprica” hasn’t frakked up major yet, so we’ll see. Several times a year, Kristen and I watch award shows and send acerbic comments back and forth by text message. No records survive of these exchanges, but I can confidently tell you that they are witty, insightful and hilarious. This year, due to scheduling conflicts, we were unable to swing it for the big event, the 82nd Academy Awards. But through the mighty power of the DVR and Google Chat, we bring you, a day late and a dollar short, this recap of the night’s many travesties and single triumph. Go on, read more…

The Wildboyz of Top Gear
When I was younger, I used to want to be famous so I could work with the Muppets. The venue didn’t really matter—I mean, I really wanted to guest host “The Muppet Show,” but I’d settle for a one-off on “Sesame Street.” Even if my six-year-old self got to discuss the attributes of various cookies with Cookie Monster, I’d take that.
Now I want to be famous so I can be a Star Driving a Reasonably-Priced Car on “Top Gear.” Go on, read more…

I’m a theorizer, and Battlestar Galactica lends itself to theories. Cool hardware (and yes, that includes Starbuck) brings the nerds in, but deepening mysteries keep them and the occasional hapless bystander coming back for more. In the lead-up to the story’s conclusion, huge questions lingered. Who are the final five Cylons? Can humans and machines maintain an uneasy peace? What does “All Along the Watchtower” have to do with any of it? I had my theories for all of them. I was always at least a little off. (I had Adama for the final Cylon, and I didn’t know what the frak “Watchtower” was all about.) But on the biggest bet of the entire series—the final fate of humanity on a planet of their own—Friday’s three-hour series finale gave me a rich, sweet, unqualified win… and then completely ruined it for me.
